Ex-FBI chief James Comey charged for third time by Trump administration
–
Neutral summary
The US Justice Department has charged former FBI Director James Comey with transmission of national defense information and conspiracy to transmit it, marking the third federal case against him since the start of President Donald Trump's second term. According to a charging document unsealed on Monday in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, prosecutors allege Comey directed the disclosure of national defense information to a reporter through one or more co-conspirators in October 2016, when he was head of the FBI. The case relates to disclosures published by The New York Times, according to ABC News and BBC News, and had been under seal since early October. Comey denies all allegations; in an Instagram video he said "they're back again" and that he is "still innocent." His lawyers have filed a motion to dismiss the case, arguing it is legally invalid and comes too late. Comey was previously charged in September 2025 with making false statements to Congress, a case a judge dismissed over irregularities in the appointment of an acting prosecutor, and in April 2026 with allegedly threatening President Trump's life in a social media post. Trump fired Comey as FBI director in 2017, and the former director has since been a frequent target of the president's criticism. Interfax reports Comey does not admit guilt; Readovka notes his defense has filed a motion to dismiss. DW emphasizes the lawyers' argument that the case is legally invalid.
