Harry Kane wins Ballon d'Or, first English winner in 25 years

–

Neutral summary

Harry Kane won the 2026 Ballon d'Or on Monday, becoming the first English player to receive the award since Michael Owen in 2001. The Bayern Munich and England striker beat Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal to the prize at a ceremony in London's Palladium theatre. Kane also received the award for best striker of the year, sharing it with Mexico's Charlyn Corral. The women's Ballon d'Or went to Alexia Putellas, and the best goalkeeper award went to Unai Simón of Athletic Club. In the 2025/26 season, Kane scored 73 goals in 65 matches for Bayern and England, winning the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the German Super Cup with his club, and a bronze medal at the World Cup with his national team. The UK prime minister hinted at a possible knighthood for Kane. The official Ballon d'Or website accidentally published the news of Kane's victory seconds before the official announcement, then removed it. Lionel Messi did not travel to London for the ceremony.
