Microsoft offers buyouts to 60,000 employees
–
Neutral summary
Microsoft has announced a voluntary buyout program that will be offered to approximately 60,000 employees — more than a quarter of its global workforce of about 223,000 people. The program, internally called the Voluntary Exit Offer, was announced on Monday, October 26, in a memo sent to staff by chief people officer Amy Coleman. She wrote that it gives employees “the opportunity to leave Microsoft with financial support and career planning resources.” The terms of the buyout will resemble Microsoft's standard severance offer. Eligibility extends to staff at vice president level and below in the US, Canada, India and the UK, including teams working on Xbox, Windows, Copilot, finance, human resources and the CoreAI division. Employees working on data centers, sales, marketing, cybersecurity and quantum computing are excluded. The company has not yet disclosed how many employees are expected to accept the offer. The move is seen as an effort to cut costs while Microsoft pours record sums into artificial intelligence infrastructure: La Tribune reports $41 billion in capital investments in AI in the last quarter, while Numerama cites plans for $175 billion in investments in 2026. The Mirror recalls that in 2025 Microsoft pledged £22 billion for AI infrastructure expansion in Britain between 2025 and 2028. Several outlets note this is the first such large-scale initiative in the company's history.
