Walter Koenig, Star Trek's Chekov, Dies at 90

–

Neutral summary

Walter Koenig, who played Pavel Chekov in the original “Star Trek” series (1966–1969) and the franchise's first seven films, died Sunday at his home in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, his agent Zachery McGinnis confirmed. He was 90. Koenig joined the show in its second season: creator Gene Roddenberry decided to add a Russian character to the Enterprise crew, and the role went to the then-little-known actor. The introduction of a Russian officer working harmoniously with a diverse crew came amid real-world Cold War tensions. Beyond Star Trek, Koenig was also remembered for a very different role in the 1990s sci-fi series “Babylon 5.” His former co-star George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, wrote on social media that Koenig was a “loyal friend” and served as best man at his wedding. With Koenig's death, only William Shatner and Takei remain from the original series' main cast. Some outlets, including Serbian media, give his age as 91, but most sources agree on 90.
