China and North Korea open New Yalu River Bridge after 12-year delay
–
Neutral summary
China and North Korea officially opened the New Yalu River Bridge to traffic on Thursday, October 15, ending a 12-year delay and creating a major new route for cross-border trade. The four-lane, cable-stayed bridge, about 3 kilometers long, spans the Yalu River, the natural border between the two countries, connecting Dandong in China's Liaoning province with Sinuiju in North Korea's North Pyongan province. Officials from both countries attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony, with trucks adorned with Chinese and North Korean flags crossing in both directions and hundreds of people gathering on the Chinese side to watch. Chinese Premier Li Qiang, in a taped speech to the ceremony, called the bridge a landmark in Chinese-North Korean friendship, saying it would promote economic and trade ties, expand personnel exchanges and tighten the bond between the two peoples, according to state news agency Xinhua. The bridge was completed in 2014 but remained closed for more than a decade because the North Korean side did not finish access roads and customs facilities. The opening comes amid deepening ties between Pyongyang and Beijing, as well as with Moscow — on September 7, 2026, Russia and North Korea opened their first road bridge across the Tumen River via video link. Experts quoted by Deutsche Welle link the launch to the growth of North Korea's trade with China and Pyongyang's efforts to balance between Beijing and Moscow. The new crossing is expected to replace the Friendship Bridge in the same region and become the main land connection between the two countries.
