Istanbul hit by worst floods in 84 years: three dead, thousands evacuated
–
Neutral summary
Torrential rains that hit Istanbul on October 14 caused the worst flooding in 84 years, killing at least three people, with four to six others reported missing. Among the dead was a 14-year-old boy who was electrocuted after stepping into a puddle. Governor Davut Gul said the city experienced its most intense rainfall in 84 years, with some areas receiving up to 261 mm of precipitation — a record since 1942. Authorities closed schools in six provinces, granted leave to some public sector workers and urged residents to stay home. More than 2,700 people were evacuated from flooded homes, with rescuers using boats to navigate the streets. Dozens of flights were diverted due to the weather, including six flights from Turkey to Moscow that turned back over Poland and Belarus because of restrictions at Vnukovo airport. The Russian Consulate General in Istanbul advised Russians to exercise caution. Local authorities recorded 1,277 flooding incidents, 15 landslides and 47 cases of people trapped by water. Reports on the number of missing persons vary: from four (according to the governor) to six (according to Libération).
