Trump announces 'massive' Greenland exploration; island and Denmark push back

–

Neutral summary

US President Donald Trump announced on October 14 on Truth Social that a “massive” oil, gas and mineral exploration is set to begin in Greenland, which he described as “our new and beautiful Greenland”. The statement came after a campaign event in Wasilla, Alaska, where Trump was stumping for Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. Greenland and Danish authorities quickly rejected the claim. Greenland’s deputy mining minister Jørgen Hammeken-Holm told CNN: “We are very far away from ‘massive’ exploration,” adding that smaller-scale activities are underway but could take years to become operational. Denmark’s foreign ministry said the security agreement signed in September between the US, Denmark and Greenland does not grant US investors special rights and does not change the requirement that any exploration comply with local laws. Al Jazeera reported the agreement excludes mining or drilling rights while reinforcing Greenland’s sovereignty. Le Monde noted Greenland banned hydrocarbon production in 2021, though US company Greenland Energy hopes to take control of three still-active exploration licences. Greenland’s parliament, according to Ouest-France, has moved toward banning deep-sea mining. The office of Greenland’s prime minister declined to comment on Trump’s statement.
