Trump open to meeting Putin and Xi without Zelensky

–

Neutral summary

US President Donald Trump said he is ready to take part in a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. According to The Wall Street Journal, Putin proposed the meeting for next month and asked that Volodymyr Zelensky not be invited. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said such a meeting is possible but remains a hypothetical scenario. Trump said he would participate if Xi wants the meeting to take place, and reports suggest it could be held on the sidelines of the APEC summit. Mint reports Trump sees the meeting as a chance to discuss denuclearisation rather than the Ukraine war, while Danas says he does not intend to discuss ending the conflict there. Trump again sharply criticized Zelensky, accusing him of not wanting to end the war and saying “millions of people on Ukraine’s side would still be alive if Zelensky had made a deal.” He added that Russia is “acting fairly” toward Ukraine and that the US has given Kyiv a lot “and they gave us nothing.” Zelensky, in an interview with Bloomberg, accused Trump of pushing for Ukraine’s “capitulation” and proposed halting strikes on Russian refineries in exchange for Patriot air defense missiles. According to Axios, Zelensky also secretly asked a group of US senators to press the White House to lift restrictions on intelligence sharing and arms supplies; the White House denies such restrictions exist. Against this backdrop, Zelensky traveled to Norway for talks, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz appealed to Trump to continue supporting Ukraine.
