Austrian Airlines flight from Tel Aviv makes emergency landing in Sofia after bomb threat

–

Neutral summary

An Austrian Airlines flight OS82 from Tel Aviv to Vienna was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Sofia on the evening of October 18 after a bomb threat was reported on board. According to Bulgaria's BTA news agency, the crew received the threat as the aircraft approached the Romanian border. The Bulgarian Air Force scrambled MiG-29 fighter jets to escort the plane, which landed in Sofia about 30 minutes after the initial alert. There were 51 passengers and six crew members on board, all of whom were evacuated. After a thorough search found no explosives, the flight resumed and arrived in Vienna early on October 19. Bulgaria's transport ministry opened an investigation into the incident. Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that the threat was called in by an Austrian national who was not on board, though this information was not confirmed by other sources. The incident came amid recent false bomb reports on Delta flights from New York to Israel, and following an attack on a Flydubai aircraft bound for Tel Aviv in late September.
