Fire at Canadian military base kills four, injures 39

–

Neutral summary

The fire broke out on October 18 at CFB Wainwright in Alberta during a live-fire training exercise. According to officials, it started as a smoldering grass fire in the training area and quickly grew due to strong winds, with gusts reaching 96 kilometers per hour. Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the deaths of four service members and said dozens of others were injured. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith reported that 39 people were hospitalized, 19 of them in critical condition, some with severe burns. The Canadian Armed Forces identified the deceased as Sergeant Morgan Wong, Private Shaun Farrell, Private Aidan Goulding, and Private Hayden Lykkemark. A period of mourning has been declared, with flags lowered to half-mast on federal buildings. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Major General Wade Rutland said commanders believed the fire was under control, but a sudden change in wind caused it to spread rapidly. Some outlets, including Metropoles, initially reported seven deaths, but the prime minister corrected this to four.
