Trump endorses Netanyahu ahead of Israeli election
–
Neutral summary
US President Donald Trump endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Knesset election set for October 27. The statement came on October 18 on Truth Social, nine days before the vote. Trump wrote that Netanyahu “has been Strong, Brave, and Brilliant in the face of tremendous opposition” and offered his “Complete and Total Endorsement.” He also warned that if Israel had the “wrong Leader,” America would have to “do this work” in Iran itself, adding that he was “not inclined to do so.” Netanyahu thanked Trump, calling him the “greatest friend of Israel,” and vowed to work with him to “eliminate the Iranian threat over the next two years, or even sooner.” Opposition candidate Gadi Eisenkot praised Trump’s contribution to Israel’s security but stressed that only Israelis would decide the next prime minister at the ballot box. Analysts note the endorsement came after months of rocky relations between the two leaders and that most polls show Netanyahu’s coalition falling short of the 61 seats needed to form a government. Some pundits in Israeli media criticized Trump for “interfering” in the election, while others linked his move to Washington’s reluctance to fight Iran alone. The vote is the first since the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023 and the ensuing wars in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. Outlets differ on the endorsement’s impact: The New York Times says the “Trump brand” is not what it once was in Israel, while El País argues the backing came late, with voters largely decided.
