Ledger unveils Atom, a secure Android device without phone functions

–

Neutral summary

French company Ledger unveiled Atom on October 15, an Android-based device that looks like a smartphone but has no calling or SMS functions and is designed to be used alongside the owner's main phone. The device combines two operating systems: Android for everyday tasks and Ledger OS, which it switches to for cryptocurrency transactions, confirming AI agent actions, and protecting privacy. Chief Technology Officer Charles Guillemet said artificial intelligence is "changing the security landscape," as "finding vulnerabilities and exploiting them costs almost nothing," and hardware should be part of the solution. Pricing varies from $849 (about €760 excluding tax) for the Founders edition, according to Frandroid, to €899, as BFMTV reports; pre-orders are open and deliveries begin in summer 2027. The announcement came five days after confirmation of a spy chip found in wallets sold by an authorized reseller, which forced Ledger to halt sales of some hardware in Southeast Asia. CEO Pascal Gauthier told L'Express that one "must be healthily paranoid." The company positions Atom as "the world's first truly secure Android device" and hopes to expand beyond the cryptocurrency market.
