–
Neutral summary
On Thursday, October 15, 16-year-old John J. Griffin opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing three students — aged five, eight and 11 — and a teacher. A seven-year-old child in a wheelchair and a 54-year-old teacher were wounded and hospitalized in critical condition. The gunman was shot and killed by 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco, a father of two students at the school, who was driving by and heard gunshots. Police said the teenager used a shotgun belonging to his mother and had fired at a pickup truck before entering the school. The shooter's motives remain unknown. According to CNN, there have been more than 50 shootings at educational institutions in the US since the start of 2026. Democrats have called for stricter gun control following the incident.
