Dozens killed as school roof collapses in Pakistan's Peshawar
–
Neutral summary
On the morning of October 15, the roof of the three-story Al Khair private school collapsed in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, while classes were in session. The victims were mostly young students, aged between 4 and 14, who were trapped under the rubble. According to the latest figures cited by Interfax and TASS, citing Associated Press and Geo TV, at least 34 children and one teacher were killed, with more than 50 people injured. Earlier reports gave lower numbers: initially, rescue officials spoke of 10 injured, then of 17 students killed. Rescue workers and local residents spent hours searching through the debris for survivors, with the injured taken to Lady Reading Hospital. The school's owner was detained and authorities launched an inquiry. Officials said the roof was structurally weak and had been overloaded by additional construction work. A local resident, Sher Ahmed, blamed the tragedy on the use of poor-quality building materials and demanded a thorough investigation. Funeral prayers for the victims were held in Peshawar, drawing thousands of mourners. Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. Dawn noted this was not an isolated incident, recalling that in June, 14 children died when a roof collapsed in Lahore.
