White House press secretary admits failing bar exam
–
Neutral summary
New White House press secretary Katie Zacharia has admitted she failed the bar exam, after her legal credentials came under scrutiny. In a Fox News interview on October 15, host Sean Hannity asked her: “You took the bar exam, but you didn’t pass the bar exam, correct?” — and she replied yes. Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University’s law school in 2011, but a law degree does not automatically qualify someone to practice law. She had previously described herself as a lawyer on television and social media, and President Donald Trump introduced her as an attorney when announcing her appointment. Two watchdog groups filed complaints with the California bar asking it to investigate whether she violated the law by calling herself a lawyer. Zacharia also said the White House never asked whether she had passed the exam, and that she “woke up at 3 in the morning” before her first briefing, which lasted less than 15 minutes. Separately, her remark that China lacks “adequate bathrooms” drew an ironic response from Beijing, which invited her to visit the country more often. The White House is defending Zacharia: communications director Steven Cheung called her “exceptionally qualified and extremely intelligent.”
