Car plows into Newcastle Knights fans: 10 injured, teen driver charged
–
Neutral summary
Around 9:30 a.m. local time on October 3, a BMW drove into a crowd of Newcastle Knights fans who had gathered on Newcastle Link Road near the Transfield Drive roundabout in Wallsend, about 160 km north of Sydney, to see the team off ahead of its first NRL grand final appearance in 25 years against the Sydney Roosters. New South Wales police said ten people were injured, including three children; a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man were in critical condition, while the other eight were taken to John Hunter Hospital in stable condition. The driver, an 18-year-old provisional licence holder identified in media reports as Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, was arrested at the scene and charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris told ABC the driver was “revving the car, he was excited” and lost control. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his thoughts were with everyone injured. Authorities have ruled out terrorism. Earlier reports cited nine injured before the figure was updated to ten. The Sydney Morning Herald reported the driver had previously lost his licence.
