UAE says Flydubai co-pilot planned 'terrorist act', attacked captain with axe

–

Neutral summary

On Saturday, October 3, UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi confirmed that the co-pilot of Flydubai flight FZ1073, en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv, had planned and begun to carry out a "terrorist act". According to the investigation, he attacked captain Smit Machchhar with the emergency axe kept in the cockpit for use in crises. The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 30; the plane carried more than 170 passengers and crew, with some reports putting the number at 182. Passengers and crew managed to subdue the attacker, and a reserve Flydubai pilot aboard took control and landed the aircraft at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where the co-pilot was detained. The wounded captain later said the co-pilot had left his seat before the attack, saying he wanted to pray. Australian security agencies have opened an inquiry into the period the suspect spent in the country as a student; ABC reported police want to determine whether he was radicalised there. "Corriere della Sera" reported that 29-year-old Omani national Hammam al-Hammami had previously been dismissed from Oman's national carrier over suspected religious extremism, while The Jerusalem Post, citing N12, said he had visited Israel before and had landed at Ben-Gurion Airport a week earlier. The attacker's motive has not been officially disclosed, and the investigation continues.
