Yemen launches major military operation against Houthis

–

Neutral summary

On Sunday, October 4, Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi announced the launch of a major military operation aimed at bringing all of the country's territory back under government control, including the Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The offensive follows weeks of escalation in which the Houthis seized large areas, including stretches of coastline, and cut a key road linking Taiz with Aden. According to AFP, more than 70 people were killed in a day of fighting in Taiz province and neighboring Lahj: government sources reported 34 troops killed, while Houthi sources said 39 of their fighters died. A few days before the operation, Yemeni authorities announced general mobilization. On Saturday, October 3, loud explosions were heard in Sanaa, the Houthi-held capital, with pro-Houthi media blaming Saudi Arabia for the strikes. The same day, the Houthis said they had attacked Saudi oil company Aramco's facilities in Riyadh with missiles and drones, causing a fire. According to Zerkalo.io, the United States is providing intelligence for the operation. Saudi Arabia, which backs the Yemeni government, announced additional financial aid to the country's authorities. The Houthis, for their part, dismiss reports of government gains as propaganda.
