Europe's summer 2026 heat killed over 50,000, study finds
–
Neutral summary
A study published in the journal Nature Health estimates that 50,391 heat-related 'excess deaths' occurred across 854 European cities between June and August 2026. Scientists from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Imperial College London attribute 32,619 of these deaths, or about 65%, to anthropogenic climate change. The highest numbers of excess deaths were recorded in Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom. In Spain, the heat caused more than 5,200 avoidable deaths, with Barcelona and Madrid among the most affected European cities. In the UK, the death toll exceeded 4,000. Previous record summers were 2003 (28,000 deaths) and 2022 (29,000). Politico Europe reports this was the deadliest heat season in Europe on record. La Repubblica notes that Italy ranks first in deaths, with Milan setting a record, though the data are disputed. The study covers 30 countries, including EU member states, the UK, Norway and Switzerland.
