–

Neutral summary

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Baqên County in Nagqu city, northern Tibet, on the evening of October 22, with the epicenter at a depth of about 10 kilometers. At least 16 people were killed and 65 injured, 11 of them seriously, according to Chinese authorities. The quake destroyed or damaged 339 homes and 20 livestock shelters, collapsing hundreds of buildings. More than 12,000 residents were evacuated, and temporary shelters have been set up with tents, warm clothing, food and essentials. Over 300 police officers and troops from the People's Liberation Army joined the rescue effort, with more than 1,600 people mobilized in total. Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered an all-out search for survivors, care for the injured and repair of damaged infrastructure. The epicenter was in a sparsely populated high-altitude area more than 4,500 meters above sea level, about 400 kilometers northeast of Lhasa. It was the strongest earthquake in China since January 2024. Injury figures vary: early reports cited 32 or 54 wounded, while later Chinese media reported 65.
