Plus tôt, The Atlantic, citant deux responsables de l'administration, a rapporté que la Maison-Blanche avait demandé au Pentagone de développer des options de frappe contre des cibles iraniennes avant les élections de mi-mandat, bien qu'aucune décision finale n'ait été prise. Le New York Times, citant des responsables américains anonymes, a rapporté que l'armée a préparé des options pour de nouvelles opérations de combat à grande échelle contre l'Iran, y compris une campagne courte mais intense de trois jours ciblant les missiles, drones, installations énergétiques et sites militaires iraniens ; Politika a rapporté que plus de 20 000 marins et Marines américains pourraient être déployés au Moyen-Orient. Al Hadath a affirmé que l'armée avait envoyé à Trump des propositions de frappes jusqu'à 80 kilomètres à l'intérieur de l'Iran, mais que Washington se concentre actuellement sur un blocus des navires et ports iraniens. Suite aux déclarations de Trump, le brut Brent est tombé à 103 dollars le baril, tandis que les indices boursiers européens et asiatiques ont progressé.
