Volvo expands Nvidia partnership for hands-free driving by 2030

–

Neutral summary

Volvo Cars announced an expansion of its nearly decade-long partnership with Nvidia to develop a new generation of autonomous driving technology. The system, called Alpamayo, will use Nvidia's open-source software and enable point-to-point driving, including pulling out of a parking spot and parking at the destination. Volvo plans to launch the system in one of its upcoming models before 2030. It will be classified as Level 2++, meaning the driver must remain attentive while the car handles the driving. According to TechCrunch, the collaboration will extend beyond Volvo's battery electric vehicles. The announcement coincided with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's visit to Sweden, where the company opened a new AI hub in Stockholm, housing its Swedish office and working alongside selected startups. Beyond Volvo, Ericsson, AstraZeneca, Saab and SEB are involved in larger AI initiatives with Nvidia. El Economista noted that Volvo will combine its safety systems and engineering expertise with Nvidia's AI and computing technologies.
