Egyptian farmer's find leads to Ramses II statue pieces

–

Neutral summary

Egyptian authorities announced on Tuesday, October 13, the discovery of fragments of two giant royal statues, including one depicting Ramses II, in the village of Behbeit El Hagar in the Gharbia province of the Nile Delta. The find began when local resident Khaled El-Shahat Khalil noticed an unusual stone with ancient inscriptions in front of his house and alerted the authorities. Excavations that followed uncovered parts of two sculptures attributed to Ramses II, who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago. The head of the first statue, 1.6 meters tall, depicts the pharaoh wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt, a symbol of the unification of the two territories. Experts estimate one of the statues could have reached about 8.5 meters in height including its base, while the Times of India reports a statue of 28 feet, roughly the same measurement. Archaeologists also found several smaller statues adorned with inscriptions. The discovery is expected to deepen knowledge of ancient Egypt's cultural and political legacy.
