Sega pulls Total War: Shogun 2 remaster from sale after disastrous launch

–

Neutral summary

Sega and Creative Assembly have temporarily pulled Total War: Shogun 2 — Complete Edition from sale, just two days after the remaster of the beloved 2011 strategy game launched on October 13. The decision followed a flood of negative reviews that gave the game a “mostly negative” rating on Steam, with players pointing out numerous bugs and the telltale signs of AI upscaling, which, according to GameSpot, led to bizarre artifacts such as a samurai’s face merging with his helmet or extra fingers on character artwork. In a statement cited by GameSpot and PC Gamer, Sega said the Complete Edition “has fallen short of both your expectations and our own standards,” but did not directly address the AI criticism. The original 2011 version of the game has been restored to storefronts in place of the remaster. Developers have promised to fix the issues, as reported by DTF and Igromania. The remaster, developed by MATABOO in collaboration with Creative Assembly, was expected to be a major success as a revival of one of the franchise’s most appreciated strategy titles, notes Gamekult. According to Heise and Golem, the new version survived on sale for only two days.
