Pentagon plans to livestream Fort Hood shooter's execution; Trump wavers

–

Neutral summary

The Pentagon has announced that the execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, will be public and livestreamed. The firing squad execution is scheduled for December 3 at Fort Hood, Texas, and would be the first military execution by firing squad since World War II. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday the Pentagon will “make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public.” President Donald Trump said Friday he approves of the livestream, but later told reporters that a determination is still being made, though he confirmed the execution will be by firing squad. Vice President JD Vance said he does not know whether the Pentagon will carry out the livestream and that he will not watch, adding that “this is a guy who brutally murdered a lot of innocent people.” The plan has drawn broad condemnation: the UN called it “abhorrent,” and human rights organizations and lawmakers from both parties criticized the initiative. Democratic Rep. Adam Smith called the livestream “barbaric and gratuitous.” Hasan was sentenced to death by a military jury in 2013 for killing 13 people and wounding 32; Snopes reports he was found guilty of killing 13 and injuring 30. Izvestia reports the livestream drew sharp criticism from the UN and Democrats, while The Economist calls making a spectacle of the death a deliberate political choice.
