Three killed in Houthi attack on Riyadh airport

–

Neutral summary

Two missile strikes on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 8 killed three Saudi nationals, including Saudia pilot Hamoud Ali Alqalthami, according to Saudi authorities and the airline. The kingdom's civil aviation authority said several people were injured and a Saudia aircraft was damaged. The attacks forced diplomats to shelter in place, delayed dozens of flights, and led many airlines to cancel flights to the Saudi capital days before it was due to host a major meeting of global oil chiefs. The Houthis claimed they targeted the airport with a ballistic missile and said they were holding their ground, while Yemen's government claimed progress in its Red Sea counter-offensive. Saudi Arabia and its coalition allies vowed a “firm response” to the attacks, the United States urged Americans in the Middle East to exercise “heightened vigilance,” and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency recommended airlines avoid additional areas of Saudi airspace, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemning the strikes on civilian infrastructure as “completely unacceptable.” The airport resumed operations after the attack, the civil aviation authority said. Earlier, the Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed 82 Houthi military targets in Yemen, including ballistic missile storage sites in Saada, and Yemeni government forces reported 2,103 “precise targeting operations” and 1,860 Houthis “neutralised.”
