Three men charged in US for $129 million AI-powered fraud

–

Neutral summary

Three men — Jacob Solla, Sharon Hazan, and Guy Shitrit — have been charged in the United States with fraud totaling more than $129 million. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, from July 2024 to February 2026 they used artificial intelligence to impersonate executives and lawyers at major firms. The victims include hospital systems, a bank, and a mutual fund. The scheme involved contacting company employees, usually in accounting, and asking for help with a confidential deal while using AI to mimic the CEO's voice. The fake CEO would then direct the employee to lawyers at international firms, also played by group members, who supposedly handled the deal. Eventually, the victim was asked to transfer a large sum to accounts around the world, and the money was converted into cryptocurrency and divided. Solla was arrested in Spain in June, Hazan there in August, and Shitrit in the UK in September. According to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, two of the three defendants are Israelis, and the investigation was led by the FBI.
