Two Britons charged over RAF Fairford incident, one accused of aiding Iran
–
Neutral summary
British prosecutors have charged two 24-year-old London men in connection with the September incident at RAF Fairford. Mohmed Ahmad Abdulkarim is accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service, believed to be Iran's, while Nouman Essghir is charged with entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK. Both appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday. According to investigators, both men acted on the instructions of a person named 'Ali', believed to be outside the UK and working for Iran. Essghir is said to have conducted reconnaissance of the base in August, filming it, while Abdulkarim prepared vehicles and equipment. On 27 September, three vans arrived at the base, two loaded with petrol; one participant told police of a supposed bomb in a vehicle, but no explosives were found. The incident triggered a major operation and evacuation of residents. The base had been used by US bombers for strikes on Iran, but they were withdrawn on security grounds shortly after five Britons were arrested outside it. Essghir was remanded in custody until a hearing on 20 November. Andrew Burnham earlier said the incident was almost certainly orchestrated by Iran's Revolutionary Guard. Six other men have been arrested and released on bail.
