UK to deploy fighter jets to defend Saudi Arabia from Houthi attacks
–
Neutral summary
The United Kingdom has announced it will deploy Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets to defend Saudi Arabia from escalating attacks by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said the aircraft will conduct defensive counter-air operations to protect Saudi cities, civilian populations and critical national infrastructure, but will not carry out offensive strikes against the Houthis. The deployment also includes an RAF A400M transport aircraft and an unspecified number of military advisers, with the air-to-air refuelling mission extended by an additional 90 days. Streeting called the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia "absolutely despicable and dangerous for the region," noting that the targeting of Riyadh's airport in particular shows the lengths the Houthis are going to escalate the situation. The decision comes as the kingdom has been pummelled by missile and drone strikes from the militant group. Yemeni authorities said a Houthi strike on Monday against a training camp for Saudi-backed government security forces killed 58 people. The National reports the mission to defend Saudi Arabia will include Typhoon jets. British media, including the Daily Mail and The Mirror, describe the operation as a defensive shield over the kingdom. Politico Europe stresses the Ministry of Defence said the aircraft will only be used in a defensive capacity. Le Monde notes the deployment extends a long-standing military alliance between London and Riyadh and reflects concerns about the conflict's impact on energy supplies.
