Italy tightens protest laws, sends 500 troops to Milan after riots

–

Neutral summary

Italy's Council of Ministers on Tuesday, October 20, approved a security decree in response to violent protests across the country. The decree creates a new criminal offense of "violent participation in a demonstration," introduces harsher sentences for rioters and holds parents financially liable if their children take part in vandalism and looting. It also makes it easier to detain minors. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the deployment of 500 additional troops to Milan. According to Euronews, Meloni said nearly 200 police officers had been injured and 330 people detained, around half of whom she said were of "foreign origin." Earlier reports cited more than 270 arrests. The unrest took place on Saturday and Sunday amid protests over the rising cost of living. In central Milan, rioters set fires and looted shops, and some luxury brands have kept their stores closed. Similar measures are being introduced in France: the city of Marseille imposed a curfew for minors from October 20 following street violence on the sidelines of protests on October 17, with similar restrictions already in place in Paris, Lyon, Nice and Lille. Further protests are expected over the coming weekend.
