UN food agency cuts aid to 500,000 in Gaza over funding shortfall
–
Neutral summary
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has announced it is forced to reduce its humanitarian operations in the Gaza Strip due to a lack of funding. The number of people receiving monthly food assistance will drop from 1.6 million to 1.1 million, leaving about 500,000 Palestinians without support. The agency says two-thirds of Gaza's population still faces acute food insecurity. WFP country director Shaun Hughes said the decision was necessary to ensure resources last as long as possible. The cuts affect both food rations and cash assistance. The WFP called on the international community not to look away from the war-devastated territory. According to Gaza's health ministry, at least 1,552 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli attacks since the ceasefire began a year ago. Some outlets, including The Independent, report that aid has also been cut for 200,000 people in the West Bank, but other sources do not confirm this.
