Australian MP Helen Haines loses leg after car ramming; suspect charged

–

Neutral summary

Independent Australian MP Helen Haines lost a leg after being deliberately struck by a car outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it a deliberate act. The suspect, 43-year-old Brendan Nugent, has been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Haines remains in critical condition. The incident occurred on Murphy Street at about 3:30 pm local time, when Haines was retrieving items from the boot of her car. Police say the driver rammed her twice; bystanders detained the driver until police arrived. Haines was airlifted to Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where she underwent surgery. Nugent's father, Rod Nugent, said his family has known Haines for more than 20 years and called the incident 'devastating and unfathomable'. Nugent is due to appear in court on Wednesday. Victoria Police said they will argue the ramming was targeted. Some outlets report Nugent had previously shared pro-Gaza content and criticized Israel on social media, but the motive remains unclear. The attack has raised concerns about rising political violence in Australia.
