Об этом говорится в письме исполняющего обязанности министра ВМС Хунга Као сенатору-демократу Кирстен Джиллибранд, датированном 22 сентября. Као уточнил, что попытки были совершены как на самом авианосце, так и на кораблях и среди летного состава группы, и что завершенных суицидов за время миссии не было. Развертывание, в ходе которого группа участвовала в боевых действиях против Ирана, длилось, по разным данным, от 260 до 286 дней подряд, что, по словам демократов, является рекордом для современных ВМС США. Один из моряков, по данным O Globo, упал за борт в начале августа и был спасен вертолетом, другой пытался прыгнуть в море в марте, но его остановили. Сенатор Джиллибранд раскритиковала президента Трампа за «неуважение» к условиям службы на корабле, назвав его реакцию «неприемлемой», тогда как представитель ВМС заявил ABC News, что число попыток не выходит за рамки нормы для длительного развертывания. Пятый канал отмечает, что частота попыток в группе сопоставима с общими показателями ВМС США.
