Супер-Эль-Ниньо, который учёные называют «Годзиллой», уже побил рекорд температуры в Тихом океане за несколько месяцев до пика. По данным Climate Impact Lab, за следующие полгода из-за экстремальной жары могут умереть более 450 000 человек. Наибольший риск — для Нигерии, Индонезии, Судана, Индии и Бразилии. Температура в центре явления достигла 3,05 °C, превысив прежний максимум 3,02 °C, установленный в ноябре 2015 года. Учёные предупреждают, что это может стать самым сильным Эль-Ниньо за 1000 лет. Ожидаются засухи, пожары, наводнения и неурожаи, а также угроза голода для десятков миллионов людей. По оценкам, в Индии жара может унести 15 800 жизней. В Латинской Америке, по данным CEPAL, возможна потеря 2% ВВП и рост бедности на 4,8 млн человек. Земля может стать самым жарким годом в истории, а в 2027 году жара может усилиться.
