Власти первоначально связали смерть с вспышкой заболевания, однако выжившие и родственники погибших утверждают, что люди задохнулись из-за переполненности камеры и недостаточной вентиляции. Полиция применила слезоточивый газ против протестующих, требовавших справедливости, а губернатор штата объявил трёхдневный траур и перенёс начало предвыборной кампании перед выборами, намеченными на январь. Комиссар полиции Адаму Эллеман распорядился провести расследование инцидента.
