Министр иностранных дел Китая Ван И на встрече с иранским коллегой Аббасом Аракчи в Пекине 16 сентября призвал Тегеран и Вашингтон проявлять сдержанность, вернуться к Исламабадскому меморандуму и «приступить к содержательным консультациям». Китайский дипломат заявил, что Пекин готов защищать «законные интересы» Ирана, и призвал все стороны принять эффективные меры для скорейшего возобновления судоходства в Ормузском проливе, подчеркнув, что затягивание конфликта не отвечает общим интересам. Аракчи, в свою очередь, назвал консультации с китайскими официальными лицами «успешными» и поддержал четыре принципа регионального мира, предложенные председателем КНР Си Цзиньпином. Визит иранского министра в Пекин стал вторым с момента начала масштабных ударов США по Ирану в конце февраля, а переговоры прошли за неделю до ожидаемой встречи Си Цзиньпина с президентом США Дональдом Трампом в Вашингтоне.
