Законопроект, внесённый депутатом от Лейбористской партии Лорен Эдвардс, предполагал, что пациенты с прогнозом жизни менее шести месяцев смогут получить медицинскую помощь для ухода из жизни после одобрения двумя врачами и комитетом специалистов. Премьер-министр Энди Бёрнэм в голосовании не участвовал, заявив, что не хочет «чрезмерно влиять на дебаты». Поражение завершает двухлетнюю парламентскую дискуссию: ранее палата поддерживала аналогичный законопроект, но он не стал законом из-за проволочек в Палате лордов.
