Американские врачи впервые успешно использовали генетически модифицированную свиную почку как временный «мост» до пересадки человеческого органа. 66-летний Тим Эндрюс с терминальной почечной недостаточностью прожил с ксенотрансплантатом 271 день, не нуждаясь в диализе, после чего ему пересадили почку человека. Орган от свиньи по кличке Вильма был пересажен в январе 2025 года в больнице Mass General Brigham в Бостоне, а в октябре того же года его пришлось удалить из-за проблем.
