По данным следствия, оба действовали по указаниям человека по имени «Али», который, предположительно, находился за пределами Великобритании и работал на Иран. Эссгир, как считают британские власти, ещё в августе проводил разведку Фэрфорда и снимал базу, а Абдулкарим занимался подготовкой машин и оборудования. 27 сентября к базе прибыли три фургона, два из которых были загружены бензином; один из участников сообщил полиции о якобы заложенной в машине бомбе, но взрывчатки обнаружено не было. Инцидент вызвал масштабную операцию и эвакуацию жителей. Авиабаза использовалась американскими бомбардировщиками для ударов по Ирану, но они были выведены по соображениям безопасности вскоре после ареста пяти британцев у базы. Эссгир был оставлен под стражей до слушания 20 ноября. Ранее Эндрю Бернам заявлял, что инцидент почти наверняка организовала иранская Революционная гвардия. Ещё шесть человек были арестованы и отпущены под залог.
