O prêmio reconhece suas descobertas sobre canais iônicos controlados por luz e a criação da optogenética, uma técnica que permite aos pesquisadores ligar e desligar neurônios em cérebros vivos usando luz. Segundo relatos da imprensa, o avanço começou com estudos da alga verde unicelular Chlamydomonas, que nada em direção à luz; Hegemann e Nagel identificaram uma proteína sensível à luz na alga, e Deisseroth a aplicou para controlar neurônios. O laureado americano, que soube do prêmio na madrugada de segunda-feira, interrompeu ligações de felicitações para preparar o almoço dos filhos, episódio amplamente divulgado pela mídia. Cientistas afirmam que a optogenética abre novas possibilidades para o estudo do cérebro e o tratamento de condições psiquiátricas e neurológicas, incluindo depressão, autismo e doença de Parkinson.
