Les attaques, baptisées AdFection, exploitaient des vulnérabilités pour infecter les appareils lorsque les utilisateurs consultaient simplement un site web ou utilisaient une application. Les chercheurs ont constaté qu'au moins 45 appareils appartenant au personnel d'Al Jazeera ont été ciblés en 2024 et 2025. Des publicités liées à l'opération sont apparues sur les sites web de l'Union européenne, de l'OTAN et du Pentagone, et l'ampleur de l'opération pourrait avoir atteint des centaines de millions d'internautes. Le Comité pour la protection des journalistes a appelé les autorités israéliennes et autres à enquêter et à traduire les responsables en justice.
