La Formule 1 revient en Afrique : le Rwanda signe un accord de 10 ans pour un Grand Prix

La Formule 1 a officiellement annoncé son retour en Afrique mardi 13 octobre, en signant un accord de 10 ans avec le Rwanda pour accueillir le Grand Prix d'Afrique, avec la première course prévue au début des années 2030. La dernière fois que la série a couru sur le continent, c'était en 1993 à Kyalami en Afrique du Sud, où Alain Prost avait remporté la victoire. Le nouveau circuit sera construit à Bugesera, à environ 40 km au sud de Kigali, à côté du nouvel aéroport international de la capitale, et répondra aux normes de grade 1 de la FIA. La conception devrait tirer parti du paysage local et des dénivelés, et au-delà des week-ends de course, le circuit accueillera des événements internationaux de sport automobile, des conférences et des divertissements. Le Rwanda a annoncé sa candidature pour la première fois en 2024, et le président Paul Kagame a qualifié l'accord de « succès et de jalon pour tout le continent ». Amnesty International, cependant, a accusé la Formule 1 de se livrer à du « sportswashing » en accordant un Grand Prix au Rwanda, affirmant que le sport est utilisé pour embellir le bilan du pays en matière de droits de l'homme. Certains médias, dont El Mundo, notent que la stratégie de Kagame visant à faire du Rwanda une vitrine internationale, avec le Qatar comme partenaire clé, est derrière l'expansion sportive du pays.
