L'explosion s'est produite tôt vendredi 25 septembre et a été si puissante qu'elle a été entendue dans toute la capitale ; l'immeuble s'est effondré « en quelques secondes », endommageant les maisons, les magasins et les voitures voisins, avec des débris dispersés jusqu'à trois pâtés de maisons. Les premiers rapports mentionnaient une personne blessée, puis deux corps ont été retrouvés, et samedi le bilan avait atteint six morts. Le maire d'Athènes, Haris Doukas, a déclaré que l'explosion était probablement due à une fuite de gaz, mais une enquête officielle est en cours, avec la participation de la brigade des incendies chargée des crimes d'incendie. Les résidents avaient averti les responsables municipaux et des services publics du risque de fuites de gaz ou de courts-circuits il y a un an, selon iNews. Les bâtiments adjacents ont été évacués et sont actuellement inhabitables.
