Plus tôt, des sources avaient fait état de travaux sur un accord par étapes impliquant la réouverture du détroit en échange de la levée du blocus. Trump a également publié une carte qualifiant le détroit de « détroit de Trump », et le secrétaire du Conseil suprême de sécurité nationale iranien, Mohsen Rezaei, avait donné à Washington quatre à cinq jours pour répondre. Au cours du week-end, les Houthis du Yémen ont attaqué Riyad. Clarín a rapporté que le pétrole Brent avait clôturé à 104 dollars le baril.
