Le super El Niño, surnommé « Godzilla », a déjà battu des records de température dans le Pacifique des mois avant son pic. Une étude du Climate Impact Lab prévoit plus de 450 000 décès supplémentaires liés à la chaleur dans le monde au cours des six prochains mois. Les risques les plus élevés se situent au Nigeria, en Indonésie, au Soudan, en Inde et au Brésil. La température au cœur du phénomène a atteint 3,05 °C, dépassant le précédent record de 3,02 °C établi en novembre 2015. Les scientifiques avertissent que cela pourrait être le plus fort El Niño depuis 1 000 ans. Les impacts attendus incluent sécheresses, incendies de forêt, inondations, mauvaises récoltes et la menace d'une faim aiguë pour des dizaines de millions de personnes. En Inde seule, la chaleur pourrait faire 15 800 victimes. En Amérique latine, la CEPAL estime une perte de 2 % du PIB et 4,8 millions de personnes plongées dans la pauvreté. La Terre est en voie de connaître son année la plus chaude jamais enregistrée, et 2027 pourrait voir des températures encore plus élevées.
