Saudi organisers say 2027 Asian Cup on schedule despite Houthi attacks

–

Resumen neutral

The local organising committee of the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia has said preparations for the tournament are progressing according to schedule despite a new wave of attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels on the kingdom. The competition is due to start on January 7 in three Saudi cities — Jeddah, Riyadh and Al Khobar. The committee said work was continuing in coordination with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), amid concerns that the escalation in fighting could lead to the postponement of several sporting events. AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said on Wednesday that the competition could be moved back a year to 2028 if needed, stressing there was “no hurry” to make a decision and that a final call could wait until the end of November. Several sporting events in the kingdom have already been postponed because of the attacks. Outlets such as Clarín and Terra report the Asian Cup could be postponed to 2028, while organisers insist preparations remain on track.
