Lions player Hyron Andrews found dead in hotel on eve of Champions Cup match
–
Neutral summary
South African rugby player Hyron Andrews of the Lions died on Friday morning in a hotel on the Île de Ré, where the team was preparing for a Champions Cup match against La Rochelle. The 31-year-old was found unconscious in a shower cubicle and could not be resuscitated. The La Rochelle prosecutor's office has opened an investigation, with cardiac arrest as the leading hypothesis; no signs of violence were found. The club confirmed Andrews' identity in a statement released on Friday afternoon. Andrews previously played for the Sharks and spent two years with Sale in the Gallagher Premiership before returning to South Africa this summer. The club confirmed the match scheduled for Saturday will go ahead in his memory. Psychological support has been set up at the hotel for the team. Belfast Telegraph notes the tragedy comes exactly 10 years after the sudden passing of Anthony Foley.
