Italy and Spain agree to lift Schengen border controls

–

Neutral summary

Italy and Spain have agreed on a phased lifting of border controls introduced amid the migration crisis in Ceuta. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met on the sidelines of the EU summit in Brussels, after which Italy decided to extend the controls for only seven days. This was done to synchronize the expiry of Italy's measures with the end of reciprocal restrictions imposed by Spain. According to sources, the interior ministers of both countries will work over the next week to find 'joint alternative cooperation measures' that would allow the controls to be fully lifted. Le JDD reports the crisis was triggered by the arrival of more than 60,000 migrants, mostly from Morocco, over the summer. Meanwhile, elDiario.es notes that Denmark, Poland and Italy also sought to include points in the summit's final resolution criticizing Spain's migration policy, including its regularization program.
