Houthi strikes on Saudi airports kill at least 14, Riyadh airport suspends operations

–

Neutral summary

Over the weekend, Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi rebels launched a series of strikes on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, as well as on Dammam airport and Aramco energy facilities. Bloomberg reported that these were the deadliest attacks on Saudi Arabia since the Yemen war began in 2014, with at least 14 people killed and hundreds wounded. The Saturday strike killed between 12 and 13 people and injured more than 300, according to varying reports; the Sunday attack killed one Pakistani national and injured 11. The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted missiles and drones. On Monday, Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation extended the suspension of operations at Riyadh's airport to verify the safety of facilities, without specifying when they would resume. Aviation analytics firm Cirium said about 60% of scheduled flights for Monday were expected to be cancelled, after 99.7% of Sunday's flights were scrapped. The US and UK advised their citizens to exercise heightened caution, and the US Federal Aviation Administration urged American airlines to be careful in Saudi airspace. Nigeria condemned the attacks as a dangerous escalation violating Saudi sovereignty. Reports said Riyadh had asked Pakistan for help amid a shortage of interceptor missiles. The Houthis reported 124 strikes on Yemeni territory since October 10.
