Tiger that killed man at Yorkshire Wildlife Park will not be put down

–

Neutral summary

On Saturday, 10 October, a man died after entering the Amur tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in northern England, where he was attacked by the animal. Witnesses reported hearing shots, and footage circulating online showed the tiger standing over the man as he lay on the ground. Yorkshire Ambulance Service received a report of the incident at around 1:35 pm and dispatched two land ambulances and a helicopter, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. South Yorkshire Police confirmed the death and urged the public not to share videos of the attack. The park's management expressed condolences to the victim's family and said it was cooperating with the authorities. The tiger, a male named Altai weighing around 190 kg, was not injured, and the park confirmed it would not be euthanised. According to witnesses, before entering the enclosure the man asked a visitor to take a photo of him with the tiger, and resisted when bystanders tried to stop him from climbing over the fence. The park was evacuated and will remain closed on Monday, 12 October, while the investigation continues. The incident has reignited debate in the British media about the role of zoos, with campaigners accusing them of using conservation as “greenwash” while the chief executive of Edinburgh Zoo defended zoos as a vital force for conservation.
